What is binge drinking? Why is it so common among young people and here in the CNMI?

"Binge drinking is where a large amount of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time." (alcoholireland.ie/alcohol-and-you/binge-drinking/) According to the office of National Statistics for binge drinking, men consume 8 units in a single session while women consume 6 units in a single session. [By using the term 'units', I mean that they drink the given beer, for example.] Binge drinking is common to young people around the ages of 16-18 and it is a serious problem.
Although the youth drink less than adults do, when they do drink, they drink more. That is because young people consume more than 90 percent of their alcohol by binge drinking. (National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism) Many young lives are put into danger because of binge drinking. In "Why Colleges Haven't Stopped Binge Drinking", it is said that because of alcohol-related cause, more than 1,800 students have died. An addition to that, 600,000 get injured and about 100,000 have turned into victims sexual assault influenced by alcohol. For two decades, about a rate of 40 percent of college students are binge drinking.
Binge drinking is common in the CNMI because most supermarkets still sell alcoholic beverages to minors without knowing they are minors. Other than that, minors are still able to consume alcohol because adults buy it for them. Drinking alcohol is common in the CNMI, probably because of culture. Many drink to have fun and to forget about their current problems in life. Another reason why drinking is common because the laws are not too strict.
Binge drinking, in my opinion, is bad. Consuming large amounts of alcohol can ruin your kidneys and may not be able to function properly. A persons body can process only one unit of alcohol per hour. When consuming a lot of alcohol within a short time period, it may raise your blood alcohol concentration (BAC). The effects of large alcohol intakes are your physical and mental health. Being drunk affects your coordination. In consequential cases, there is a big possibility that you may die. Binge drinking may be beneficial for those who choose to forget some things occurring in their lives. But, it is not safe to overdose.
In conclusion, binge drinking is a serious but preventable public health problem. We can lessen student death rates by not selling alcoholic beverages to minors. If the case isn't about selling alcohol to minors, then we should have a stricter law about adults providing minors with alcohol. I am not saying that it is okay to start binge drinking. What I am trying to say is that we can prevent this by putting effort into doing so.
